Phosphorus supply and management in vegetable production systems in China

Rui WANG, Weiming SHI, Yilin LI

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 6, Issue 4,   Pages 348-356 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2019277

Abstract:

Vegetable production systems involve high rates of chemical and organic fertilizer applications, leading to significant P accumulation in vegetable soils, as well as a decrease in P use efficiency (PUE), which is one of the key limiting factors in vegetable production. This review introduces the vegetable production systems in China and their fertilization status, and analyzes probable causes of overfertilization of vegetable fields. Poorly developed root systems and high P demand have led to the need to maintain much higher available P concentrations in the root zone for regular growth of vegetables, which might necessitate higher phosphate fertilizer input than the plants require. Research on strategies to improve vegetable PUE and the mechanisms of these strategies are summarized in this review. Increasing the P uptake by vegetables by supplying P during the critical growth stage and effectively utilizing the accumulated P by optimizing the C:P ratio in soils can substantially increase PUE. These advances will provide a basis for improving PUE and optimizing phosphate fertilizer applications in vegetable production through regulatory measures. In addition, some policies are recommended that could ensure the safety of vegetables and improve product quality. This review also aims to improve understanding of P cycling in vegetable fields and assist in the development of best practices to manage P reserves globally.

Trend Analysis and Policy Recommendation on Aqutic Biosecurity in China

Huang Jie,Zeng Lingbing,Dong Xuan,Liang Yan,Xie Guosi and Zhang Qingli

Strategic Study of CAE 2016, Volume 18, Issue 3,   Pages 15-21 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2016.03.003

Abstract:

The development status and trend of Chinese aquaculture disease control is analyzed in this paper, and basic judgments are made on aquatic biosecurity in China. According to the 13th Five-Year Plan, the paper summerizes the strategic objectives, priorities and principles that will benefit the aquatic biosecurity system in China. Furthermore, in order to provide theoretical support for the sustainable development of Chinese healthy aquaculture, the authors put forward some important suggestions, such as "adjusting the development policies for Chinese aquaculture under the guidance of biosecurity", "actively being geared to international standards to promote Chinese management levels on aquatic animal health", and "quickly launching and implementing a batch of key science and technology R&D programs on aquatic biosecurity". As indicated in this paper, the aquatic biosecurity is at the strategic position of national ecological security and its implementation reflect the governance capacity in aquaculture, and it should be centered on the aquatic biosecurity to lead the upgrade and reconstruction on Chinese aquaculture. It is emphasized that the biosecurity system in national and provincial genetic breeding farms for pedigree and fine varieties of aquatic species should be launched as soon as possible.

Strategic Study of CAE 2016, Volume 18, Issue 4,   Pages 23-31 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2016.04.004

Abstract:

Technological innovation is an important driving force for the development of the environmental protection industry and is particularly important to promote industrial upgrading and transformation of environmental protection as the new normal. Based on the data from the fourth survey of environmental technology research and development (R&D) situation of 23 820 enterprises related to the national environmental protection industry, with using descriptive statistical method, the state of R&D investment and technological innovation of China’s environmental protection industry in 2011 are analyzed in this study. A qualitative analysis of the factors affecting China’s environmental protection industry’s R&D capabilities is made to help decision-makers to fully grasp the inputs and outputs for R&D in the environmental protection industry.

Moving policy and regulation forward for single-use plastic alternatives

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 3, doi: 10.1007/s11783-021-1423-5

Abstract: Single-use plastics are often used once or cannot be reused for extended periods. They are widely consumed with the rapid development of social economy. The waste generated by single-use plastics threatens ecosystem health by entering the environment and ultimately restricts sustainable human development. The innovation of sustainable and environmentally friendly single-use plastic alternative materials and the joint participation of governments, enterprises and the public are promising technologies and management approaches that can solve the problem of single-use plastics wastes. The development of single-use plastic alternative products can be promoted fundamentally only by improving relevant legislation and standards, providing differentiated industrial policies, encouraging scientific and technological innovation and expanding public participation.
